A few years ago, I wrote this post on our milk cow. She’s still around! She has a strange combination of a devil-may-care attitude along with a solicitous mothering instinct towards everyone.
But the Georgia scene has had its developments, so I think it’s about time to write an update on the family cow.
First off, she birthed this calf. (Read his birth story here.)
It was a surprise to finally get a bull calf from Georgia, after three little heifers.
Meanwhile, we discovered some rather surprising genetic traits in the heifers from Georgia. So we basically decided to only keep Georgia’s calves for meat, or else to sell them. I’m not sure I want our cows to have horns.
And then Georgia had another bull calf, pictured here at a few months old. This was during our brief stint with a neighboring goat hanging about. He kind of joined the herd there for a while. Being wily and skittish, there was nothing anyone could do.
So that is the updated milk-cow story. She is currently not producing milk, because I felt that she was a bit on the thin side. I want her (and me) to have a nice vacation until she has her next calf next spring.
And then the daily milk saga will continue!
